Established in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to reserve john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired third-level domain names remained online.
